James RyballI own two oils by an artist who signes J Roybal… I absolutely love them to death. Ever since I clapped eyes on them at a Struggling Artist sale in Bournemouth I had to buy them. Please excuse the wonky presentation :D

On trying to find out information about him over the years I drew a blank. I did find something today though but not sure if it’s correct:

J Roybal is a multitalented artist who has been highly influenced by The work of Boulanger. His style of color and balance of characters in his paintings reflects a wide range of styles, ranging from musical statements of children learning to play instruments, to sports, involving children at play with polo and football, allowing his audience to capture a pure moment of innocence and celebration of being a child. His main theme
throughout his work underlines the essence of music and play, and the role it has throughout many of life’s many encounters. At times his work is very textured giving it an old world feeling with a contemporary theme, while at other times his use of color is very graphic, going from muted tones to very bright and bold. Some refer to his images as “Puffy People”.
Roybal began painting at the age of 18 and continued throughout his life in Italy, painting children at play in many of the towns and villages that he frequented. “Coming to the United States was quite and experience”
quotes Roybal, ” Many of the towns and villages in Europe are quite different from the city scapes in the United States and the backdrop of the children at play has changed quite significantly.” Roybal currently resides in
upstate New York where he continues his work surrounded by his three children and wife of 25 years. Roybal’s paintings may be found in fine galleries throughout the United States and Europe as well as South America. “

Still doesn’t give any information on where to contact the wo/man to thank her/him for my pleasure.

Does anyone else have fine art that they adore?

harvey-scales-7.jpgLooking around for new sounds I’ve not really taken into account before now I came across some Harvey Scales tracks.

Of course… for me, Anyway You Want (RM file alert – download Media Player Classic and rid yourself of RealPlayer for ever!) is an absolutely blinding track that everyone knows. Has the mid-tempo Latin feel just right for my weary bones and satiating my need for Latin Soul :D

Came across another track by him (them, The 7 Sounds) today… Harvey Scales – Broadway Freeze. What a funky fucking track! Woohooo :D Broadway freeze? More like Broadway Hot Me Up!

My 3rd and final track is offered from the wonderful CD I received from Nick Hackett and Hannah’s anniversary CD presented at the 6T’s Weekender 2007 to celebrate their 3rd Anniversary together (see Nick, said I’d mention more of your tracks from that wonderful CD!)…. Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds – Too Good To Be True.

harvey-scales.JPGNot sure what our gorgeous Harvey is upto now as I can only find info about him up to 2001 with a rather ‘lets smoke some dope’ speed vocal video here!

So, according to wikipedia he’s penned songs for The Dells, The Dramtics and The O’Jays and his Son is a performer too known as JR Da Supastar. OK, that’s a bit cheesy but I can’t confess to having listened to any of his tunes. Looks as though Harvey’s first release came out around 1967, the year after I was born! Probably a very early contender for the invention of the genre Funk!

It says “

Disco Lady” is the very first platinum single, selling over two million copies, in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America. It was certified platinum on April 22, 1976. Scales is the first African American song writer to receive this status.” although not sure how, it’s a shit record LOL :D

Sorry Harvey, it’s really horrible :D

I guess I’d have to be back in 76 at a City Disco to appreciate this. Mind you, great lyrics and rather rude. I think that was the order of the day back then… heralding the onslaught from Saturday Night Fever no doubt …. underhand sexual references :D

Anyway, thanks for your tunes Harvey & The Seven Sounds (and don’t worry, he’s not smoking in an enclosed public space… :D

Well, after a week of having my car up for sale I decided to put it on EBAY last night. 3 girls were interested straight away and the first viewed her this morning…. and paid me a deposit! It gets picked up tomorrow and will be driven away, never to be seen again :(

Another thing happened today… my Son did his FIRST load of washing! He was adamant that he didn’t need to because he was wearing work clothes next week. I pointed out that if his clothes were to fester for yet another week they might be hitch hiking to the nearest launderette. Reluctantly he loaded the drum and turned the dial. The deed was done… well, the first leg in any case. Now he’s got to master pegging it out on the washing line… my study overlooks our back garden so I might sneak some photos whilst he try’s to master this new task :D

And voila! Here he is LOL – He wasn’t very happy but at least he’s conquered the art of laundry… long may you prosper widow twanky :D

I’ve also been modding my Domo Kun in order that I might adhere him to the front dash of my new smart car :D So, because he’s fluffy I had to glue clear plastic to the bottom of his feet that will allow me to use sellotape sticky pads. Well, I don’t want him glued permanently to the Smart dash do I!

I’ll post a picture of him in-situ tomorrow :D

James BrownHow terribly sad for the soul world. The loss of such an awesome entertainer is only acceptable because his music will be allowed to live on.

What a complete diversity of genre he’s covered. For me, my favourite has to be It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World. Please, Please, Please and Try Me follow very closely behind. His early stuff showed off his wonderful voice moreso than later recordings – but that’s just my opinion.

Seeya Jim Bob.

Impalas – Whip It On Me.?? I’ve been listening to this for the past 4 days… isn’t it just FABULOUS!

Whip or Whoop? What ever it is it’s bloody brilliant
